Nair Mess, Triplicane

Nair Mess was in my wishlist for a very long time. The last attempt to dine at this place didn't workout well. The second time too, things were happening in such a way that we won't be able to make it. But determination kept us going and we reached the place by 1.30 pm for lunch on a weekday.

Nair mess is located in one of the by lanes aka muttu sandhu opposite to Chepauk stadium. My expectations were high for food and least for the ambiance. I don't know the reason, but I expected a real dark and dingy place. To my surprise this place looked like an upgraded version of a Mess. It was clean and bright and big. Only thing that made justification for the word mess was the crowd. The place was buzzing with activity. Staff running around with rasam bucket or plates with fish fry and other delicacies. Lucky us, a table was free and we got seated immediately.

For lunch the options are limited with meals, mutton biriyani, fish fry, fish & mutton curry (gravy) and prawns. We were three of us. We ordered a mutton biriyani, 2 portions of vanjiram fry (they didn't have any other fish), prawn thokku and sura puttu (minced shark) along with couple of meals and fish gravy. Food arrived in minutes, piping hot. Meals comes with a kootu, veg curry, sambhar, rasam and pickle. Both the veg accompaniments were good. The fish curry on the other hand was sad. It lacked the tangy punch and was too thin. I liked the fish gravy at Kumaravel Chettinadu meals comparatively. Fish fry was good with faint coconut oil flavour. I would like my fish fry to be more spicier. But that's personal preference. Prawn thokku was very good. With soft, well cooked prawns in a spicy onion tomato base and the strong coconut oil taste, I liked it a lot. The others felt that the prawns weren't fresh. I'm not experienced in sea food. So not judging the dish on that aspect.

Sura puttu was tad bit salty, but while having with rice it wasn't. Mutton biriyani was made of basmati rice and tasted chettinadu style preparation. I expected malabar style. This one was very spicy and nothing to rave about. Mutton pieces were tender. The accompanying mutton kurma was not the correct accompaniment for biriyani. It was more like a stew and will go well only with idiyappam or aapam. I couldn't finish the biriyani. I had little bit rasam which tasted average. Have had better rasam. Chicken fry was very good. Soft and juicy meat in a fiery onion-pepper-tomato base was excellent.

All the above along with 4 coke set us back by 1100 bucks. Moderate pricing for the place and taste. Service was quick and attentive. Will I go back? Well if I'm in that part of the city I don't mind. But definitely won't travel all the way from ECR just to have lunch here.
