Kannadhasan Mess

A simple, no frills, no fuss, place that looks like an upgraded version of Kaiyendhi bhavan shells out awesome food. There was this situation where I have to be in T.Nagar every second day at 8 AM. I'll fix up my appointment and will directly head to this place for breakfast. Located on the rear side of Natesan Park, this place is run by the legendary poet Kannadhsan's daughter and her family. I was here 6-7 times and every day I see his grandson manning the place.

They've a handwritten menu displayed on a white board. The list of dosai is quite exhausting as well as exciting. First day, I had their poondu (garlic) dosai. Large and fairly thin dosai, smeared with spicy garlic thokku was simply amazing. This is strictly for those who can tolerate the strong, pungent smell of garlic. Sambhar was very good. Coconut chutney was good. And the red chutney was average. After this I also had a vendhaya (fengureek) dosai. Crisp edges and a soft centre this had that distinct bitter flavour of fengureek. The sambhar complemented well for this one. These two amazing dosais just for 80 bucks along with a water bottle. I simply couldn't stop myself from ordering poondu dosai during my next few visits.

After literally getting addicted to the poondu dosai, I tried hard not to order it again as I wanted to try the other items on the menu. I tried idli, vada curry and vadai one day. Idlis were so soft like a sponge. Vadai was warm with crispy outer layer and soft and fluffy centre. I loved the addition of minced ginger in the vadai. Vadacurry was one of the best I had in recent times. A tad bit spicy, the way I like with loads of onions went very well with those idlies. 2 idlies, 1 vadai and a portion of vadai curry costed me just 50 bucks.

And the other item I had was the poondu adai (Oh I love garlic :D). Adai by default will be thick. My periamma makes super thin adai, yet she manages to deliver the flavour of it. The adai I had here was exactly like that. Thin, with generous amount of garlic thokku/chutney smeared over, it was mind blowing. Costs 50 bucks.

All the days I went, the place was maintained very well. Even if there are any plates left on the slab, they clear it off within seconds after informing. The staffs are very friendly. During my second visit, I requested them to serve sambhar in a separate cup for which he happily obliged. Now I know where to go for pocket friendy, lip smackingly good dosais and other breakfast menu at T.Nagar.
