Mini Sabha Walk for evening tiffin/snacks - Sabha Canteen Roundup 2016

I just wanted to do one more sabha canteen either for breakfast or evening tiffin. While thinking og which place to go, thought why not all the four Sabhas in and around Alwarpet/Mylapore. That's how we decided to do a mini sabha canteen walk.

Started the walk with Mint Padmanabhan at Music Academy. We went pretty early by 3.50 pm and few of the items weren't ready by then. We had Gova badhusha, bombay kaja, keerai pakoda and milagu vadai. Both the sweets were yummy. Keerai pakoda was made of methi and was a little salty and the chutney was cold and didn't taste fresh :( Milagu vadai (in account of Hanuman Jayanthi) was so so. Paid 130 bucks in total.






From Music Academy we walked to Naradha Gana Sabha. The canteen here is run by Sri Sasthalaya Caterers. The menu looked great and we were confused on what to order and what to leave behind. Made up our mind and ordered the Gova jhangiri (after seeing many raving reviews), arcot makkan peda, vazhai poo vadai, pidi kozhukattai, thattu idly and spl kara dosai along with filter coffee. Every single dish was awesome. I've spent few years of my childhood eating Makkan peda and this was exactly like the ones we get in Chairman sweets. Gova jangiri was not my cup of tea. Pidi kozhukattai was yumm with finely chopped green chillies and ginger. Soft and fluffy thattu idli and Kara dosai (Day's special) was simply amazing. With red chutney smeared inside, topped with grated and paneer and finely chopped green chilli it was too good. A special mention to the red chutney, sambhar and the brinjal puli kothsu. They were too good, flawless and we asked for more. 3 chutneys, sambhar and kothsu were the accompaniments for every savoury dish. Fresh and strong coffee was the perfect end to the fantastic food. Total bill was 260 bucks which is definitely value for money. They do accept cards. And the service was top notch.












Our next stop was Mylapore fine arts. While I had a very good lunch experience this season, the evening tiffin was terrible. Mini ball kozhukattai aka the ammini kozhukattai was tempered with what we do for lemon rice. No sign of coconut or the ulundhu thalippu :( Worst kuzhi paniyaram I've ever had. Hard and dripping with oil. 3 Paniyarams for 60 bucks is day light robbery. Kasi halwa was the only relief. Wasted 150 bucks here.




Finally we stopped by Parthasarathy Sabha at Vidhya Barathi Kalyana Mandapam. Much raved canteen in this season. Kavuni arisi halwa was sour and tasted more like wheat halwa. Morekuzhambu bonda was so so. Kancheepuram idli was delicious. The much talked dish Chocolate dosa wasn't that good. There was no enough chocolate drizzled and the batter was very sour. We couldn't finish it. Paid 300 bucks here. Cards accepted.






To sum it up Sri sasthalaya caterers at Narada Gana Sabha won the show. What a lovely food. And I've decided not to go to Music academy for next season.

Mint Padmanabhan Catering @ Music Academy, Sabha Roundup 2016

A sudden lunch plan led us here for lunch. Last year I had a mixed bag experience here (with evening snack). Paid for the meal, got the token and we were shown our seats quickly. This was the menu

The mohanthal cake was very good with ghee and roasted channa dhal aroma. Sour pachadi. Both the veggies, sambhar was good. But nothing extraordinary. Ellu sadham had no flavour at all. Morekuzhambu bonda was awesome. Soft bonda had soaked in the slightly sour morekuzhambu well. Had it twice :) Karakuzhambu was so so. Mysore rasam was good and drank an extra cup. Paal paysam was a diaster. It was very thin (paal payasa vessel wash panna thanni madhiri) and less in sweet. Store bough pickle rich in vinegar :X

Taste The Season - Christmas Special Buffet @ Gossip Bistro

This place needs no introduction. The moment I saw their Christmas menu on their FB page, I knew where I'll be having dinner on christmas eve. Lovely decor and every inch of the place was screaming Xmas is here :) A specially designed, extensive menu for Xmas covering each and everything associated with christmas. I ate like a pig is an understatement.


Sangria served on the table as a welcome drink was perfect. Cheese twists, caraway biscuits and few different varieties of bread were served on the table along with roasted red pepper hummus, pesto and chicken liver pate. Hummus and pesto were delicious. I don't eat spare parts and hence didn't like the pate. But friend seemed to like it a lot. Roast chicken and pear soup with blue cheese, corn and champagne ice cubes was warm, creamy, mildly sweet and the chicken was melt in the mouth types. Black mushroom soup with vodka cream and spiced curry leaf powder was equally good.










There were three veg salads and three non veg salads along with assorted cheese platter, cold cuts with spreads and bread. Spiced Ratotouille salad was good. Spiced lamb mince and noodle salad was brilliant with a strong corriander dressing. Baked beef fillet was a little tough. But loved the cream which was a mix of mushroom, mustard and leeks.









Fantabulous is the word I have to describe the main course. Every single meat - Be it the turkey, sole fish, chicken, lamb and duck was tender and juicy. Roasted and sliced turkey, stuffed with chicken liver pate served with apple and cranberry sauce was as Christmas-y as it can get. While I loved the turkey with apples and cranberries, didn't like the stuffing cause of the liver :( Diced roast lamb was excellent with peppers, garlic and oyster sauce. Kurumolagu kozhi roast with potato sticks was spicy and went well with parotta. Tharavu roast aka the duck curry was clear winner for me. With pepper dominating the curry and the juicy duck oh boy it was fantastic. I didn't venture much on the veg side. Few things I had like the Mille feuille of vegetables, dal makhani were pretty good.












One thing that attracted me more rite from the beginning was the dessert section. Xmas pudding with butter-brandy sauce was awesome. Boozy fruity trifle, mince pies, port wine jelly were good. Loved the stewed fruits with orange liquor and ice cream. Chocolate mousse with mild orange hint was so smooth and yummy. Gulab jamun in saffron and milk syrup was delicious. Rasamalai tres leches was very moist and tasted good, but I personally needed it to be on the sweeter side.











Service was prompt and I felt the place was cramped up a little due to the buffet counter at the centre. Overall a fantastic meal on the eve of Christmas.

Buffet is priced at 999+ taxes per head. It's a special menu and will be avaialble only for lunch today (25-12-2016).
