Vaishno Thali

We wanted to wrap up a lazy Sunday with a simple dinner. While looking for options in Swiggy, came across this option. Combo offers were quite inviting and immediately placed orders. Food arrived piping hot, neatly packed in aluminium foil pouches. Our orders were 1 Paneer paratha, 1 aloo paratha, 1 Roti combo, 1 Litti chokha combo, 1 Mooli paratha combo, and 3 pcs of gulab jamun.

I warmed up the parathas slightly on tawa. Panner and aloo received thumbs up from folks at home. I had the mooli paratha combo, which had 2 mooli paratha, raita, salad, pickle and sweet. Stuffing was very well spiced and the thickness of paratha was perfect. Boondhi raita tasted good, in spite of the boondhi completely soaked in the curd. The teeny weeny gulab jamun was so soft but nill syrup. The roti combo had 5 phulkas with dal, sabji, raita, salad, pickle and sweet for 90bucks. Phulkas were soft and good. Cluster bean and aloo subji was spicy with the natural bitterness from cluster beans and tasted yummy. Dal was good too.

This is the first time I'm having litti chokha. Loved it a lot. Wheat flour dough stuffed with roasted chickpea powder with spices and deep fried. More than the litti I loved the smoky chokha. It had a strong smoky flavour from the charred/roasted brinjals and the raw onion/tomato/green chilli blended beautifully with the mashed brinjal.

Spent about 360 bucks for all these which I feel is value for money. Food was simple, homely and tasty. Vaishno Thali Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Eat like a King ... Weekend Breakfast at Gossip Bistro !!!

After couple of awesome dining experience at Gossip Bistro, it was time to check out the much talked weekend breakfast buffet. As said earlier, it is very hard to convince hubby to come to a new place. I somehow succeeded in convincing him. The hardest part was getting up early on a Sunday morning. It was next to impossible for me to get up at 9am on Sundays. But when it comes to food, I can sacrifice anything :D

To be frank, this is the huge buffet spread I've ever had for breakfast. The phrase "spoilt for choice" aptly fits here. I'll try to list things I could remember.

Idli / Vadai / Pongal / Kesari / Idiyappam (white and red)
Sambhar/ 3 types of chutney / stew / chicken curry
Minute beef steak / Chicken sausage
Roasted tomatoes / hash browns (the traditional way) / boiled eggs / baked beans
DIY salad table with variety of fresh & roasted veggies, different types of dressings and toppings.
Bread (white/wheat/multigrain), muffins, croissants and more
Cereals with hot/cold milk or yoghurt

Fresh juice (2 types) / iced tea / rose milk / buttermilk
Coffee / tea

Made to Order

Dosai (Plain/Masala/Egg)
Eggs (Omlettes/Scrambled/Sunny side up)
Pancakes
Waffles

Phewwww. I'm sure I've missed something. Every single thing I tasted was simply delicious. Particularly the beef steak. Melt in the mouth kind with that peppery sauce was to die for. Pancakes and waffles served with maple syrup/honey/cream & chocolate were light and fluffy and more surprisingly no annoying smell of egg. A special mention to their chicken curry. Thenga arachu vitta type (curry made with coconut and masala paste) was delicious. Went well with everything like dosai and idiyappam. I loved their iced tea and that strong cappuccino. There wasn't a single item I disliked.

The surprising as well as joyous part was that hubby loved it to the core. That too a thumbs up from him for the sambhar is very very rare sight for me :D The very next Saturday, went with dad (who just dislike eating out) and brother and hubby again. We were literally shocked to hear dad saying atleast 5-6 times that the food was too good.

A special mention to the service. Be it the staff or Ramya or Hari they were ready to help any number of times. Repeated orders, customisation, clearing the table promptly everything was done with a smile. All these just for 399 nett is a steal for sure. Breakfast timing is from 7.30 am to 11 am

Downtown Cafe

This place was in my to-do list for almost 10 months. After couple of failures, made it to this place on a week day lunch. They were celebrating 1st anniversary and more importantly, fellow foodie's post on Milo at this place left me craving for my cup of Milo. Being in the prime location is a huge advantage for them. Neat interiors and I liked the way they've kept a menu in every table.

Placed our orders for a portion of fish fingers and chicken sausage platter along with a cold Milo. Five pieces of fish fingers (wondering who decides the portion size/number) which were way too soft and bland. I know nothing can be done to the fish (basa) as such. The batter could've been spiked with little more salt and spiciness. That crunchiness was missing in the dish and the dip completely failed in jelling with the dish. A spicy dip would've been better with this dish. The sausage platter read as sausage cooked in some signature sauce. But what we had nothing to call signature about it. While the sausage was juicy with a nice grilled skin, the sauce tasted exactly like a thousand island dressing out of a bottle. Again the same dip for this too. Fries and garlic bread were decent. The Milo I ordered didn't come yet even after reminding 2-3 times.

For main course I was in mood for a creamy pasta and settled for penne ducale with chicken. It was a basically a white sauce pasta. It was good but nothing extraordinary to be priced at 300 bucks :O Friend ordered a mutton kebab hot dog and what came was a disaster. Dry kebab with too much of shredded lettuce, minimal to zero sauce and the wrong bread made the dish look/taste like a poorly made sub rather than a hot dog.

When I was about to finish my pasta, that tall beauty was bought to the table. Jeez. Thick and cold milo just the way I like. I was so happy that the flavour of Milo was dominating the drink, which gave me a brain freeze. And the addition of generous amount of milo on top, need I say that I fell in love with that drink :) Friend had hot chocolate and gave a thumbs up. Ordered a chocolate mud pie (smaller portion) and loved it to bits. Buttery crumbly tart with hot gooey chocolate-y centre was just brilliant. A small scoop of ice cream would do magic to this dessert.

Service was very polite but little bit flustered. Had to remind them more than 4-5 times for the drink. Otherwise no complaints. Paid close to 1300 bucks after some discount on the pasta. It was just an average experience for me. I won't mind going back just for the Milo alone :)

Place      : Downtown Cafe
Location  : Besant Nagar
Cuisine    : Cafe & continental
Cost        : A meal for two would cost 1400 bucks approximately

L'attitude 49, Mahabalipuram

A special day needed a special celebration and we decided to do a weekend getaway. After going through lot of options, we finalised Grande Bay in Mahabalipuram, as it perfectly suited our budget and other criteria. Before moving on to the food, let me quickly review the resort.

The resort is located at the entrance of Mahabalipuram from ECR-Pondy stretch. Grand and classic looking reception, followed by lush green lawns and then a big swimming pool with rooms aligned on either side of the pool. I stayed in a Deluxe room under tripe occupancy, which is duplex type. Interiors were as modern as they can be with tv in both lower and upper decks, a small cute little private garden.

Mrs.Christina from reservation team, offered me irresistible deals. More than the deals, I loved the swift reply from them unlike few other places which failed even to mail me the details inspite of asking them twice. Duplex room with complimentary dinner and breakfast, along with 20% off on spa and food orders is what I got for 11,500 bucks inclusive of everything. Single phone call and couple of mails is all I did to confirm my booking. We were surprised by a small, yummy chocolate truffle too :)

Coming to the food, their restaurant L'attitude 49, is in the reception area, with the part of the dining space overlooking the beautiful garden. Ambience was so fresh, pleasant, lively and romantic :) Both the breakfast and dinner buffet had a fantastic spread of dishes.

The dinner buffet had a soup, 2 non-veg starters, 3-4 veg starters, 3 non-veg curries, 4 veg curries, indian bread, pulao, rasam, curd rice, pickle with 4 desserts. The malai chicken tikka and the nethili fry was absolutely delicious. Fish was so fresh and the batter was as crisp as it can get and less oily too. Veg starters were equally good and I loved the corn n mushroom fritters and the chilli gobi. Sample all the three non-veg curries. Malaysian chicken and the mutton gravy were very good. Fell in love with the maanga meen kuzhambu. After tasting it, I didn't bother to look at anyother dish from the spread. I asked for some white rice and devoured the curry with rice. Desserts in the spread were very limited but everything tasted divine. Strawberry sandesh, shahi tukda, kiwi mousse and the carrot cashew kheer along with fresh fruit salad were all perfect in their own aspect.

Next day, before our boat ride on the sea, we had a sumptuous breakfast. I mean literally sumptuous. Starting from boiled eggs, spiced chicken sausages, breakfast frittata, baked beans, boiled veggies, idli, vadai, 3 types of chutney, sambhar, meen kuzhambu, 5-6 varieties of bread (with a toaster) , 6 varieties of marmalade, cinnamon roll, croissants, muffins, cereals, corn flakes, 2 types of fresh juices, eggs/plain & masala dosai/poori to order along with tea/coffee/milk/hot chocolate/boost/horlicks. Phewww.

I had soft spongy idlis and plain crispy dosai with meen kuzhambu. Omlettes were fluffy and good. A special mention to the marmalade which were exotic in combination and the taste was simply awesome. Particularly papaya+chikoo+ginger and figs+grapes were so tasty.

We also had some tea and onion pakodas along with complimentary peanut cookies via their room service. Even that was very good. No room for complaints :)

Overall, a very good experience both stay wise and food wise. Loved the hospitality of the staff and the quick, efficient service by them.
